Just An Easy 195 For Herbert

nitch2.jpgToday was training and test day and Herbert managed to do ‘an easy’ 195 meters on his freediving no limits sled. This was just testing things out but Herbert said equalization felt really good and he could have gone deeper. So things are looking good for this weekend. Tomorrow is media day, doing some more shallow dives, taking some photo’s and shooting some film.

herbdown.jpgOn the FilmOn website, where the streaming video will be shown during the official broad casted record attempt, there were 2 different dates and times mentioned when the video would be broad casted. I just had a look and it seemed that both places are put in sync again with the same date. So keep in mind: the record attempt is taking place on June 16th at 5:00 pm GMT! So this Saturday at 18:00 Amsterdam time (GMT+1)! Which would mean that the dive will take place at 19:00 hours local time, because they are in Greece which is GMT+2.

herbertprepares_185.jpgOn a side note, there is some talk going on how far no limits will be “developed”. If you look at the attached picture here, where you see Herbert with his sled and lift mechanism, it’s starting to look really… well… as to much! [edited] I get a real alien feeling when I look at the whole setup! I don’t know if the media likes it or not. It’s so far away from “freediving”, as I personally see it. What’s next? Someone on deeperblue mentions; “A human body completely encased (except for the face) in a metal torpedo, computer controlled descend and lift at 20 m/s.” Well, safety first and if this is the way to go to be certain about the safety of a freediver, then okay. But if you look at selling the sport, I don’t like it at all. The media will probably love it. It will make look no limits freedivers even more freakier and extreme, and that’s exactly what’s selling. Nevertheless, awesome stuff that’s going on over there and much respect to Herbert for what he’s doing.

hannah_stacey.jpgAs a last note; it seems that Herbert is not the only one going for some records. Hannah Stacey is going for some new British records on June 16th as well. It’s announced like this: “British Women’s champion freediver Hannah Stacey to set new men and women’s records.” She will try to break the current British records in Constant Weight and Constant Weight without Fins. And it seems that she also wants to get the mens record as well, with seems a little far away with 76 and 51 meters. It’s probably just to get some media attention. And she will probably have a hard enough time beating the only few days old British women records set by Sara Campbell.

Edited; After a good night of sleep I re-read my own article and saw that I made a comment that could have been misinterpreted. I guess that’s the problem when English is not your mother-tongue. So I edited the piece to make it more clear.
